Currently, obesity for kids and adolescents has become a serious medical problem in many countries, particularly developed countries. Obesity lead to many serious diseases and psychologycal disorders for kids. Therefore, parents should pay attention to this problem and find out ways how to lose weight for kids.

Is your child obese? Obesity means excess amount of fat in the body. But there is no general agreement about the definition of obesity for kids as in adults. There are other considerations that are used in the under 20 years of age. This is because kids are still growing, as well as boys and girls have different growth rates

Most professionals use a modification calculation of Body Mass Index (BMI) for children. While others establish based on body weight. If the weight 20% greater than ideal weight, it is obese. Or it could be measured in body fat. If the body fat exceeds 25-30% of ideal body weight, it is obese.

What are the causes of obesity on children? In general, obesity is because they consume more calories than they need. Other factors are the following :

  • Genetic factors, inherited from their parents
  • Eating habits like fast food, snacks and sweet drinks
  • Socioeconomic status.
  • Physical inactivity is also one of the causes. Too much watching TV, playing computer and video games without exercise makes them only use a few calories and cause to eat snack.
  • Medical conditions and medications, although it is very rare.

Obese children are also more likely to suffer from obesity later in life. This can increase the risk of serious health problems like heart disease and stroke. If your child shows overweight, please immediately do treatment in order not to develop further.

Obesity on children is not just physical health problems, but also related with mentally problems, social and emotional problems. Obese children are very lacking in confidence and blame themselves.

Assistance of parents is necessary, show that you love and accept them even though they are overweight. Never criticized in relation to their body weight. Help to find ways how to lose weight for kids, to achieve a healthy body weight slowly but steadily and continuously.

Supervision from a doctor is also very necessary, but parents still play a major role in creating the change. Habits of the whole family should be changed, especially in terms of eating habits and daily activity. All family members should participate and be involved in order to achieve a healthy lifestyle. Children will always learn and take an example from people around him. These efforts may be take a long time depending on the child’s age, weight and growth patterns
